Empowering Breastfeeding Mothers with Mindfulness, 2 L-CERPS,

Objectives:
Practitioner will be able to list 2 ways mindfulness can be applied
Practitioner will be able to list 2 tools to use in teaching mothers/families to “be in the present” so they can have a clearer view point of the circumstances at hand
Practitioner will be able to demonstrate use of tools such as breath and body awareness to help the mother remain in control during frustrations that may come up while establishing and continuing the breastfeeding relationship
Self-Efficacy is a major contributor to a mother’s ability and desire to breastfeed. Practitioner will be able to describe how mindfulness increases self-efficacy

WALC is willing to facilitate group renewals again this year. Kathie Russell (WALC Treasurer) will collect checks at the November WALC meeting on November 15th in Madison or you can mail it to her. You can join one or both.

The WALC Board received many applications for grants this year, possibly the most we’ve ever received! It’s exciting to see what our members are up to and we look forward to seeing the results next year. 🙂
The WALC grants awarded this year are as follows:
NWBN – Northwestern Wisconsin Breastfeeding Network- $600 towards the purchase of a freezer for a new milk depot at the Family Resource Center in Eau Claire.
Northwoods Breastfeeding Coalition – $250 sponsorship for their 10th Annual Education Day
The Mother’s Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes – $4,000 towards laboratory costs for screening of new donors and shipping costs.
The Milk Mob – $3,000 towards training of 30 Medical Residents in an 8 hour breastfeeding course.
Brown County Breastfeeding Coalition – $1,250 towards items to help local childcare providers become designated Breastfeeding Friendly.
BFAN – Breastfeeding Alliance of Northeast Wisconsin – $800 for items and handouts for ongoing efforts to help local childcare providers become designated Breastfeeding Friendly.

2016 Report to WALC
Background: In September 2015 AABN received a $1,000 grant from WALC. Initially
WALC asked AABN to use the funding for food; because food was already covered by
two other grants we received (United Way and the Wisconsin Partnership Program-
Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families) we got permission to use the funding to cover
costs to provide transportation to families wishing to attend our monthly Community
Breastfeeding Gatherings (CBGs) held at the Northside YMCA.
AABN has created the only breastfeeding support model that is culturally specific and
community-centered. The majority of participants are African Americans whose
financial resources are below the federal poverty limit. Unfortunately, for many
transportation is a luxury that is unattainable. AABN recognized this gap and has
offered transportation since 2010; however with recent funding cuts we were unable to
offer this important service.
Funding: AABN contracted services with IServe Transportation Company. Costs for
transportation for 12 months for one CBG site–we have two sites—is $3,600. It cost
$300 per event to transport 14 people. With WALC funding we were able to secure
transportation for 3 months (October, November and December). We added the
additional $100 to help offset transportation costs, and through donations were able to
secure an additional $1,800 to cover the remaining 6 months (January 2016 –June 2016).
Outcomes: During the 3 months in which we used WALC funding we had a total of 42
families use transportation services, which helped to double our attendance. By June
2016 we estimate 120 pregnant mothers will attend the CBGs. Our data indicates that
when women use our services initiation rates are 90% and exclusivity rates at 3 months
is 60%, higher than Wisconsin and the Country rates! Our data show also that pregnant
mothers attend at least 2 CBGs and attend one time during early postpartum, which
allows them one-on-one consultation with an IBCLC. Thus a great majority of the
pregnant moms attended multiple CBG to help build their breastfeeding confidence.
They are encouraged to bring a support person to the CBG. Families together build
natural supports (family, friends, peers) and leverage their support network. Mother
define breastfeeding success for themselves and AABN Peer counselors and Father Peer
Advocate help mothers achieve breastfeeding confidence and eventually reach her
breastfeeding goal.

Breastfeeding Friendly Childcare Centers
BFANWI would like to thank WALC for it’s support of the Breastfeeding Friendly Childcare Initiative. We are already making a difference for new mothers returning to work in our region!
We received a grant of $1,350. These funds were utilized as follows:
Twenty 3-ring binders –These binders were prepared to distribute to daycare providers to assist in achieving the Breastfeeding Friendly Designation. The Centers have reported back to us that the binders were incredibly helpful and provided the majority of information they needed.
Forty children’s/infant breastfeeding friendly books- We purchased 20 “Best Milk” books by Kate Carothers, 10 “Mama Mama” board books and 10 “Nurtured and Nuzzled” books.
BFAN totes printed for delivery of binders, BFAN mugs, pens, books, etc.
Breastmilk Storage Magnets- We designed and laminated milk storage guidelines for each center at no cost and purchased magnetic strips.
Door Hangers- privacy please! We designed and printed low cost door hangers for use in daycare centers and workplaces.
BFFCC training for Intern and mileage reimbursement. We were very fortunate to have an Intern from UWO working with BFAN on this initiative. She attended the BFFCC training through WBC.
Posters- BFAN was able to find a few breastfeeding friendly posters at no cost.

Dear WALC,
Thank you very much for the grant awarded to The Milk Mob in January 2016. The funds were
designated to cover scholarships to attend Breastfeeding Champion Training. Six scholarship recipients
attended the training February 19-20, 2016. All were either members of the Wisconsin Doulas of Color
or the African American Breastfeeding Alliance.
We received a net of $900 to cover $150/person. We were originally granted $1050 for 7 scholarship
recipients, but 1 person cancelled, so we returned $150 to WALC.
After the training, we sent out a web survey to all scholarship recipients. A copy of the responses we
received is attached. Five of the 6 scholarship recipients contributed comments in this survey.
The Milk Mob feels that this was a successful event for this population, who otherwise would not have
been able to attend the 16 hour training program.
