May 21st WALC meeting

The May  21st WALC Meeting will be held at Meriter Hospital in Madison.  The topic will be updates from the 1st USLCA Conference, held in St Louis, May 3rd – 5th.  A number of WALC members will present highlights from this conference – don’t miss it.  For more details, check under meetings at top of home page.

Opportunity to Travel to Uganda!

WALC has funded a grant for one of our members to travel to Uganda and work with Josephine, our ILCA partner.  Josephine has been working diligently to address the great unmet need for breastfeeding training in her part of the world.  There are no lactation consultants (hopefully, she will become the first), and health workers receive no training in breastfeeding.  Josephine has been training health workers and peer counselors, doing classes for mothers, breastfeeding consults, and has started a Breastfeeding Resource Center – all pretty much on her own.  Now we have the opportunity to send one of our members to work with her for a short time!   Timing of the visit is flexible, depending on your schedule. Please contact Becky Krumwiede for more information.

Hale Books are Here!

Hale’s 2012 Medications and Mother’s Milk book is out and WALC is offering it to all our members at a discounted rate. We ordered at a bulk rate, and have subsidized part of the cost.  List price is $39.95.  Members may buy 1 book for $20 each, and up to 4 more for $25 each. The books can be picked up at the November meeting.  You can pre-pay for your books by sending your check directly to Kathie Russell, or pay at the meeting. If you want them shipped, we will charge $5 per book to mail them. No books will be shipped until payment is received. Kathie’s contact information can be found on the member directory. We will also have the books for sale at the conference in March.

Best Milk Children’s Book by Wisconsin IBCLC Kate Carothers

Best Milk is a children’s book intended to normalize breastfeeding for children and those who read it. This book demonstrates breastfeeding as the natural way to feed your baby. Best Milk will help your child prepare for what to expect when the new baby arrives. The beautiful illustrations make this book come alive and your child will want to read it time and time again.
