Its been long since I communicated, it has been a challenging time.  This was followed by an interesting period for me because I was chosen and trained by IBFAN Uganda and Ministry of Health as a national assessor for Baby Friendly Health Facility initiative (BFHI) It is a very good opportunity for me discovering many gaps that need to be covered in relation to breastfeeding. All health facilities visited for both internal and external assessment have no mother support groups except only the one I work with. Most of them do not achieve even 6 steps so its a big task set ahead for me. There are many gaps on breastfeeding among the clinical staff.  I am working on a proposal to support some of the health facilities to become baby friendly.

Warm greetings from Uganda!

I am sending my sincere thanks to WALC for the 2 year membership
payment! This came at the most material time when my dream of
establishing a breastfeeding resource center is a couple of weeks to
becoming a reality! I have recently acquired a 5 by 6 feet cupboard
for my breastfeeding resource materials I have accumulated for the
last period!

I was recently contacted by a new mom of Twins for lactation support,
she got my contact from WALC! She is a very determined mom, currently
successfully breastfeeding her twins! She appreciates my support.

Our vegetables and fruits for the moms in mother support groups are
flourishing and many moms are happy about the output!

There is a new project -called best milk project which was started
from the book donations by Kate Carothers RN, IBCLC and being
furthered by Evelyn Harris - Secretary to the Chippewa Valley
Technical College Nursing Club. Will give you updates in time to come.

Iam working hard on attending the 2011 CAPPA  and ILCA conferences to
be able become Lactation Trainer to prepare me for the 2012 IBCLC
examinations respectively. I plan to exhibit as I did last year and
also be able to buy breastfeeding resources at the conference to stock
my breastfeeding resource center and show case during the 2011 World
Breastfeeding Week events!

Greetings from Uganda!  We have been quite busy in this period of the year, and I have attached a summary of some activities that we have managed to put our hands to. I’ve included some pictures you might enjoy.  (Read the report.)

I am wishing you and all the WALC members a successful conference.

Pardon me for not being in contact, I have been away working with
parents of deaf children and training them in community based
rehabilitation. However, we have conducted two major activities with
the mother support groups this year.

1. sharing our 2009 experiences on breastfeeding and infant and young
child feeding in general.
2. Gaining more knowledge of complementary feeding and learning
cooking multimix using locally available foods.
3. Now that I have got back, I am getting to finalise writing my
presentation to the ILCA conference in July.
4.I have secured some contribution to the conference registration $500
from ERGOBABY carrier company. Currently I am working hard to saving
for my ticket.

On behalf of the Conference Program Committee of the International Lactation Consultant Association, I am pleased to inform you that your proposal, Reaching vulnerable babies, girls and women in Africa: An experience of Uganda, was accepted as part of a workshop session for the 2010 Conference and Annual Meeting, ILCA at 25: A Lactation Celebration!, July 21-25 at the JW Marriott Hill Country Resort, San Antonio, Texas, USA.

I have been selected as a National Trainer in Infant and Young
Child Feeding by IBFAN Uganda - recommended to the Ministry of Health of
Uganda and I will be attending a Trainers of Trainers programme the
second week of December.  There wil be National trainings for Health
workers next year and I will be part of the team to conduct these
trainings. I would like to mention that its because of the support you
give me that these people are able to recognise my active
participation and recommend me. Thanks a million times.

Josephine has sent a comprehensive report about all the things she is doing to help more mothers breastfeed their babies in her region of Uganda.  She has included many pictures in the report – she is doing amazing work with the contributions from WALC!  Read her report and post a comment – I’m sure she’d be happy to hear from any of us.
