OLD BUSINESS
Programs: Meeting sites are scheduled through the end of 2008; September 19 at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa and November 18 in Green Bay. Meeting sites for 2009 are needed. Only a room is needed--WALC arranges for the speaker and pays for morning snacks. It is not necessary for lunch to be provided by the hosting facility. Let Donna Bisbee or Becky Krumwiede know if your facility can host by providing a meeting room. Several attendees expressed willingness to host a meeting, which is appreciated. Any suggestions for speakers are also requested.
Conference Report: Pat Gima reported a successful conference in March. The next WALC conference will be March 5 & 6, 2009. Two of the three speakers are confirmed—Jack Newman and Kathleen Kendall-Tackett (
http://www.granitescientific.com). Pat also suggested that one way to use some of our money might be for an outside speaker just for WALC members, possibly to provide more E CERPS for our members. It was noted that today’s presentation provided E CERPS.Membership: Sandy Testin reports 144 members. New Directories are now available.
Scholarship: Winnie Mading reports no current applicants. Application forms are on the web site. WALC’s goal is to support those wishing to do a lactation course as part of the process of gaining the IBCLC qualification.
Association Updates: Winnie is our USLCA representative. The purpose of USLCA is to promote the profession—issues such as reimbursement, licensure, insurance etc. Promoting and supporting breastfeeding is secondary. The main focus is to promote the profession. There will be a members meeting at the ILCA conference. See the IBLCE web site for new “Scope of Practice” guidelines.
www.iblce.orgPolitical Updates: Anne Altshuler reported there had been no passage of the proposed bills.
Two laws were passed in Wisconsin State Senate but neither passed the Wisconsin State Assembly.
protecting women’s rights to breastfeed in public
requiring businesses to accommodate employees needing to breastfeed or express milk, within 1 year of the birth of the child.
There is a Dane County law and a City of Madison Law prohibiting interference with breastfeeding.
Mother’s Milk Association of Wisconsin: Ruth Sweet reports that the raffle at the WALC conference raised about $700. Pat Gima reported that participants liked it; there were many positive comments.
Wisconsin supplies about 10-15% of the milk for the bank in Ohio. The Grant applied for was not approved. Further fund raising efforts will continue. Information cards regarding donating are available from Ruth. Finding and supporting donors is a challenge. There is a need for a milk drop off point in the Milwaukee area.
NEW BUSINESS
Listserv Moderator: Ruth requested a volunteer to support her as moderator of the WALC Yahoo listserve. Marcia Barritt volunteered to be Ruth’s backup. You can join the listserve by sending an email to Ruth (
ruthsweet@tds.net ) or via the WALC web site (click on “links”).ILCA Scholarships: Currently, half the profits from the conference are divided up among members attending ILCA who apply and meet the criteria for reimbursement. The wording of the policy has presented some problems with interpretation in the past, so the Board proposed the following changes to the policy:
“WALC will cover the registration fee for the President. In the event the president is unable to attend, the President-elect will have full registration covered. The remaining board members will receive half their registration costs. Board members will be eligible as soon as they take office, and for the summer after their term ends.”
Motion to accept changes made by Marcia Barritt.
Seconded by Winnie Mading. Passed
“Any remaining funds earmarked for Conference scholarships will be divided among the Board and members attending.”
Motion to accept changes made by Cindy Rux.
Seconded by Mary Ann Krainz. Passed
Application form is on the website.
Partner Program: WALC pays ILCA membership fees for two LCs, one in Uganda and one in Ethiopia. A story about WALC’s support of one of the women is in the last eGlobe. We will also offer funds to assist them in attending the ILCA conference.
Medications and Mother’s Milk: New edition comes out at the end of July. Kathie will order copies to sell to WALC members at a discount. You may buy a copy at the September meeting for $25, or you may send a check for $29 to Kathie and it will be mailed to you. Regular price is $34.95. Kathie Russell’s address is 7442 Hunter Court, Middleton, WI 53562.
Use of WALC funds: Suggestions such as special education opportunities for members, and repeat of the Hale book give away were discussed. It was decided that we will buy copies of Medications and Mother’s Milk again. The give away books are to be used as a public relations opportunity for the LC to use as a gift to others in the community, such as clinics or pharmacies, and used as an opener to discuss lactation matters. This also provides a community presence for WALC. These will be available at the September & November meetings. If you would like a copy to give away but are unable to come to one of these meetings, a copy will be mailed to you. The procedure to have a copy mailed will be in the November minutes.
Becky Krumwiede gave a public THANK YOU to Carol Cox for her roles as President, Past President, interim President, and then Past President again. We are very grateful to Carol for all her contributions over the years.
